Kotero was the female lead for Prince's Purple Rain in 1984 (at the time he changed the name of her). At the time of that year, she was replaced by Vanity as a member of the trio Vanity 6 and was a part of the group under the brand name Apollonia 6 in the film. Sex Shooter from the soundtrack made a tiny hit for her trio but as Prince's duet partner in Take Me with You she was more successful. After a falling out about the direction of her career Apollonia 6 split up and Kotero quit her relationship with Prince. Following her appearance in minor movies (and reportedly refusing to participate on her role in the Purple Rain film Under the Cherry Moon), she was a part of the 1985-86 evening drama Falcon Crest. Apollonia finally released her debut album in 1988, but the comparatively insignificant collection of songs that incorporated dance/R&B did not make much impression on those who bought music, and soon the album vanished from sight. During the following decade, she continued to be active as an actress (if she was a bit under the radar) as well as a couple of television roles, films as well as an exercise video. In 1997, Apollonia released a Spanish/English album entitled Stay with me. She returned to the school, received a diploma in filmmaking.
